BioFlex Q & A

Q: What is BioFlex?

A: BioFlex is a EPA registered antimicrobial coating for use on walls and other surfaces. It is a fungicidal protective coating.

Q: Where can I use BioFlex?

A: BioFlex is recommended for use on interior walls, fiberglass and rubber insulation on pipes and other surfaces, insulation under wall board, and interior metal surfaces.

Q: Will BioFlex help with my mold problem?

A: ASTM testing on G-21, Fungal Resistance, tests resistance to fungi. Bioflex was awarded the rating of 0, "No growth". Bioflex ASTM D3273 tests for Mold Resistence on Interior Coatings showed the best rating of 10. BioFlex contains broad spectrum antimicrobials that effectively stops the growth of molds and prevents the migration of microbes through its coating.

Q: Should I sanitize surfaces prior to using BioFlex?

A: It is desirable to initially sanitize surfaces prior to coating with BioFlex.

Q: What equipment is required to apply BioFlex?

A: Typically, an airless sprayer is used to apply BioFlex. The wet film thickness should be approximately 12 to 15 mils. Alternately, a roller or brush may be used.

Q: What colors is BioFlex available in?

A: BioFlex is supplied in white coloration.

Q: What if BioFlex is applied over an area with mold?

A: Users should always sanitize hard surfaces such as walls or wood first prior to applying BioFlex to insure that surface mold is killed. Once BioFlex is applied, it prevents fungus from migrating through its paint film. If the user knows that the substrate is heavily contaminated with fungi however, Controlled Release recommends the removal and replacement of the substrate, and then coat the newly applied material.

Q: I have a new home being built. Why should I use BioFlex if I don’t have a problem with mold?

A: Using BioFlex is not necessary if you live in an area where mold growth and proliferation is not an issue. However, in many Southern States such as Louisiana, Texas, Florida, and others, mold growth may be a problem due to humidity and temperature considerations. In these cases, applying BioFlex initially can do a lot to insure you do not have a problem in the future.

Q: Will using BioFlex stop all my mold and allergy problems?

A: No. No coating can prevent all mold and allergy problems. BioFlex is engineered to be a fungicidal coating. It cannot stop mildew or mold from occurring all over where it is not applied. Roof leaks, water in-leakage through and around improperly sealed doors and windows, and an air conditioning system that does not adequately remove relative humidity are all areas where mold growth can occur. However, by coating walls and other areas where mold can grow, a fungicidal protective coating is laid down.

Q: I want to use a low VOC paint. How does BioFlex relate to industry and governmental standards?

A: Regarding EPAs volatile organic emissions (VOCs), BioFlex exceeds standards for coatings. EPA regulations call for no more than 250 g/l VOCs, and suggests a voluntary standard not to exceed 50 g/l for interior coatings. A certified independent lab testing BioFlex reports a VOC of 26.8 g/l (ASTM D-3960), close to one-half of the EPA's voluntary limit.
